Bert Newton sings Happy Birthday to his grandson

He’s one of Australia’s most esteemed entertainers.

And Bert Newton certainly put on a show as he sung ‘Happy Birthday’ to his grandson Monty on Sunday.

The TV favourite, 79, looked to be fighting fit as he belted out the celebratory tune, after reportedly battling bad health over the Christmas period.

The clip of Bert singing ‘Happy Birthday’ was filmed by long-time wife Patti, and uploaded to her popular Instagram page.

In the short video, Bert looks bright and cheerful, wearing a checkered shirt while warbling away for young Monty who sits squarely on his lap.

But despite his status as one of the country’s eminent entertainers, it appeared the tot was less than impressed with his grandfather’s efforts, appearing quite bored throughout the clip.

‘Isn’t he gorgeous? Looks just like his Poppy!’ Bert then joked.

The festivities come just months after the former Good Morning Australia host was reportedly struck down with ‘a severe case of shingles’ over the Christmas period.

According to Woman’s Day, it was Patti who spent the season nursing him ‘back from the brink.’

The magazine quoted a close family friend as saying that , although the TV icon wasn’t rushed to hospital, ‘Patti refused to let nursing staff take over and spent hours and hours at his bedside caring for him.’

The friend allegedly added: ‘She hated seeing him in so much pain.’

But it appears beloved Bert is well and truly on the mend, spending time with his grandchildren and recently seen posing for a happy snap with fellow small-screen icons Ray Martin and Kerri-Anne Kennerley.
