British medical student ‘tried to shoot vet girlfriend’

A 23-year-old British medical student accused of firing a gun at his veterinarian girlfriend in the US insisted he never hit her but ‘threw a few punches’ at her work colleague he caught her in bed with.

Aspiring doctor Tony Boyd, 23, of Troon, Ayrshire, was released on bail following his arrest in Waukesha, Wisconsin, for an alleged attack on Fife-born Sophie Kelly.

The student, who also runs an online sportswear company, is accused of firing a gun at Miss Kelly and her friend just weeks after she moved to the US to work as a veterinary surgeon.

But Mr Boyd has dismissed her claims as ‘completely obscene’.

He said he fired the gun, which was found in her work colleague’s bag, by accident as he emptied it.

He told The Sun: ‘After living with me for one year in my apartment rent-free I went out to the US for two months to help her settle in to her new job before I came home to finish my degree at the end of August.

‘I came home to the apartment one night whilst out there to find her in her bedroom with her work colleague. I threw a few punches at him and chased him out.

‘She is trying to push charges that I hit her in spite of what happened – but this is completely false.’

Speaking of how the gun went off, the medical student said: ‘I took the guy’s bag out to the back porch and emptied it.

‘He had a gun in there and I’ve never shot a gun in my whole life. The gun went off and a bullet went off into the distance and then I ran out of the apartment.

‘I was the only one there at the time. If anyone was affected by it was mostly me. I was in shock.

‘About 15 minutes later the police turned up and I just turned myself in and I told them exactly what happened.’

Court papers show Boyd is charged with one count of discharging a firearm, two charges of battery and a charge of criminal damage to a property on August 11.

He pleaded not guilty on August 14 and after paying an £11,000 bail fee he was allowed to return to the UK to continue his final year of study at the University of Glasgow.

The couple dated for several months and enjoyed luxury holidays to Thailand, Spain and Greece together, and Miss Kelly even modelled for Boyd’s sportswear brand.

At a case hearing this week the court noted Boyd was not in attendance due to his studies in Scotland and another hearing was set for March next year.

He has been told he cannot drink alcohol or contact his ex-girlfriend while on bail.
