Charles Bronson wife hands in petition to No 10 Downing St

The soap actress who married one of Britain’s most notorious prisoners has delivered a petition to Downing Street campaigning for his freedom.

Paula Williamson, 37, a former Coronation Street and Emmerdale actress, wed Charles Bronson, who has spent 41 years in jail, in a ceremony inside Wakefield prison in West Yorkshire last month.

Today she handed in a 20,000-name petition calling for her new husband to be moved to a lower security jail.

The petition states: ‘Charlie and his supporters ask that he be taken off Segregation and transferred to a catagory A or B prison and reintroduced into general population. Only then can he prove that he really is a changed man.

‘He is no longer “Britain’s most dangerous inmate” but a man who has found true love and who ultimately wants to help steer others away from a life of crime.’

Bronson, 64, is currently serving a life term for taking a prison art teacher, who criticised his work, hostage for 44 hours at HMP Hull.

Ms Williamson was joined by Bronson lookalike, Timothy Crowley, as she handed in the petition, due to go before the Ministry of Justice, in to Downing Street today.

The couple had been together five months and met just four times when the former armed robber popped the question in February.

Despite insisting that she was marrying Bronson for love and not publicity, Miss Williamson was driven to the wedding by a Bronson look-a-like and with a documentary crew in tow.

Conjugal visits are banned in British jails so the couple will not be able to consummate their marriage.

Instead Miss Williamson, who has previously revealed Bronson wants to become a father, has declared she is ‘willing to wait’.

Asked if she believes he will one day be released she insisted: ‘Yes, yes I do.

‘I have to otherwise it would be a bit silly getting married to him if I didn’t ever believe we were going to have a life outside. I 100 per cent believe that he’s going to be out.’
