Coles launch Vegemite lamb sausage for Australia Day 2018

Forget Vegemite-flavoured chips, icy poles and chocolates, there are now lamb sausages that taste like the popular Australian breakfast spread.

Supermarket giant Coles have launched their lamb, cheese and Vegemite-infused sausages ahead of Australia Day.

Perfect for barbecues over summer, the lamb sausages offers a savoury taste with a hint of the iconic salty yeast.

‘We see demand increase for both lamb and sausages in the summer months as everyone looks to enjoy the warm weather by having a barbecue at home, the park or the beach,’ a Coles spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia.

‘That’s why we’ve given the humble snag an Aussie makeover to bring our customers something new to try this summer with these sausages a great combination of the much-loved flavours of Vegemite, cheese and 100 per cent Aussie lamb.’

The sausages are sold in a pack of 10, which will set you back just $7.

But it isn’t the first time the humble Vegemite was used in snags.

Shoppers took to social media to reveal local butchers around Australia have been selling Vegemite infused sausages for ‘years’.

Last Australia Day, Sydney’s Tender Gourmet Butchery created ‘the most Australian things ever’ by making ‘lambington’ sausages.

Adding a classic take on the Australian sweet, the lambington sausages included a combination of lamb, chocolate and coconut.

And it’s not just sausages we’ve seen the iconic salty yeast in. Last month, Vegemite came under fire for releasing a recipe online for ‘Vegemite Icy Poles’.

Fans were far from impressed, with one asking: ‘It’s not April 1st so why have you posted this? I refuse to believe it’s real.’

And another wrote: ‘For god’s sake no it goes on toast you don’t put it on a roast you don’t put it on pizza you put it on toast and only toast.’
