Did the new Vegemite do so poorly it’s selling for $1?

Social media went into overdrive when Vegemite announced a brand new ‘special edition’ spread – but the hype appears to have been short-lived.

Bega released a twist on the Australian favourite in October called ‘Vegemite Blend 17’, advertised as being ‘bolder’ and ‘richer’ than the original.

But it appears the product did not prove popular with tastebuds, as a 150gram jar was spotted on shelves at Coles supermarket for just $1 on special, down from $7.

A Coles spokesman said Blend 17 was a ‘limited-run version’ of the spread.

‘As is common with products that have been ranged for a limited period, we currently have the last few remaining jars on special.’

Daily Mail Australia has contacted Vegemite for comment.

Sold in a gold jar, the new blend was marketed as being ‘premium’ and ‘the adult version of vegemite’.

Only 450,000 were made, and opinion was divided on whether or not it was an upgrade from the original product.

A regular jar of Vegemite retails for about $3, while the new jar is selling for $7.

In a blind taste-test, seven Daily Mail Australia staff members were unable to distinguish correctly between regular Vegemite and Blend 17.

While the recipe is the same, the way the spread has been blended is different and is said to have a more ‘intense flavour’.
