Girl feared drowned at SA beach ‘an Indian soccer player’

A teenage girl missing off a South Australian beach is believed to be an Indian soccer player visiting Australia to play soccer.

Emergency services were called to Glenelg beach, near Adelaide, around 5.50pm on Sunday following reports a group of swimmers were in trouble.

Witnesses said the girl, as well as four other teenagers who were rescued, had reportedly travelled to Australia to attend the Pacific School Games.

A mother at the beach spoke to one of the youths at the scene who told her the group had been international visitors for the event which ended on Saturday.

‘He told me they were near the flags and floating towards the rocks,’ the woman told The Advertiser.

‘He said the missing girl was a soccer player.’

The witness said she saw two girls being treated at the scene by paramedics, with the group appearing ‘pretty agitated’.

‘Some of the girls were asking for goggles so they could go look (for the missing girl),’ she said.

Police from the Water Operations Unit along with the Surf Lifesaving helicopter and PolAir scoured the area for the girl, with the search resuming Monday morning.

The rescued teenagers were taken to Royal Adelaide Hospital, with at least two in serious condition, a South Australia police spokesperson said.

Three other children have died at the same spot since 2007, including two young boys who got into trouble near the jetty on January 1, 2016.

Their deaths prompted the installation of warning signs, with many urging after the death of a boy in 2007 notices should be installed about the area’s strong currents and rips.
