Mourners line streets for Manchester couple murdered after retiring in Jamaica

Hundreds of mourners lined the streets of Manchester for the funeral of a British couple murdered at their home in Jamaica.

Charlie Anderson, 75, and his wife Gayle Anderson, 71, originally from Manchester, were found by neighbours at their home in Portland.

The pair, who had been married for 55 years, retired to Jamaica last year and were believed to be in the final stages of building a new home.

Transported in matching hearses, their coffins were decorated with floral tributes reading mum, auntie, grandma and dad, uncle and granddad.

The sombre service took place at Gorton Monastery, in Manchester, with family and friends being joined by members of the public.

Two of the couple’s four grandchildren were seen before the service being comforted as they wept in the arms of other mourners.

Last month the couple’s granddaughter Stacey Anderson told the Manchester Evening News of the family’s heartbreak after their murder.

She said: ‘We were a really close family. It has been five weeks now. I know things take time, but we still don’t have any answers.

‘Whoever did this could still be running around now.’

It has been suggested that the pair were victims of a credit card scam which saw them lose £50,000 shortly before their deaths

Their bodies were flown back to the UK in July but a second postmortem delayed the funeral.

‘We are expecting a large gathering. People have already arrived over from Jamaica for it,’ Ms Anderson also told the M.E.N.

‘Even though we are devastated, it has been so comforting that people have shared their memories of my grandma and grandad, including people we don’t even know.’

At the time of their deaths, the couple’s son led a tribute, stating: ‘Charlie and Gayle were pillars of the community in Manchester and Jamaica, and were hugely popular and loved by many.

‘They were just beginning the next chapter of their lives, retiring to Jamaica before this terrible tragedy.’
