Thousands dress as Santa to raise money in charity fun-run

Thousands of Santa’s made their way through the streets of Glasgow today for the annual Santa Dash charity fundraiser.

Runners dressed in traditional Santa attire of red coats, red hats and white beers gathered in the city centre for the 10am run.

This year saw a record 8,500 runners brave sub-zero temperatures for the 5,000km run. 

Last year’s 5,000km run saw around 7,500 gathered in Glasgow to raise money for the run’s nominated charity.The fun-run has raised more than £200,000 for a number of different charities since it first started in 2006 and has become a mainstay in the city’s calendar.

The Beatson Cancer Charity is this year’s designated charity.  

Lord Provost Eva Bolander organised this year’s race. She said: ‘Seeing thousands upon thousands of Santas running through the streets of Glasgow is spectacular and unforgettable.

‘That so many take the time to come along and support charities as we head towards Christmas shows just how generous Glasgow is.

‘I hope everyone who ran the race and came along, and particularly all the volunteers, had a wonderful time.’

Road closures were expected to affect motorists until around 4pm this afternoon.
