Passengers on board the Carnival Spirit cruise ship when it was struck by giant swells and 100km/h winds have shared footage of their frightening experience.
The vessel was off the coast of New South Wales when it encountered the wild weather on Saturday, causing chaos among its 2,124 guests.
Images shared to social media showed the aftermath of the disastrous event, with hundreds of plates smashed across floors, along with spilled food and cutlery.

Judith Spence was on board and recalled her horror at ‘hearing the crew say they thought they were going to die’.
‘We had the most horrendous night on the Carnival Spirit last night,’ she said on Facebook.
‘We had 12 metre seas, sometimes 15 and 100km/h winds. So many people sick today.’

‘Thought we were going to roll over. Broken glasses in nearly every cabin.
‘Everything went flying. I found the drinking glasses under the bed.’
Another passenger Roslyn Hay Taylor recalled how glassware in the cabins were all ‘jerked and crashed’ but asserted she would still cruise again.

‘I applauded the Captain for his expertise in controlling his vessel and making it safe for all on board,’ she wrote on Facebook.
‘We also applauded the calmness and compassion afforded to all passengers by his diligent crew. I was one of the very sick and still would cruise again.’
No one was injured during the weather event with all passengers returning safely to Sydney on Monday.
