Selfish act from tourists at Wilson’s Promontory at Australia’s southernmost point

Why this innocent family photo at a tourist hotspot has angered thousands of Aussies: ‘Just rude’

  • Furious hikers stunned by family blocking lookout
  • They had setup a picnic at Wilson’s Promontory in Victoria

A hiker has snapped a picture of a family of tourists at a scenic Australian landmark blocking an entire lookout by setting up a picnic complete with deck chairs.

The photo was shared online on Monday, racking up more than 2,300 comments in less than a day.

‘It’s a long weekend, so Wilson’s Promontory was very busy. A lot of people missed out on great photos and views because these people wanted it for themselves,’ they wrote.

The national park is in Victoria and includes a peninsula, the southernmost point of the Australian mainland.

Victorians were out in droves on Monday for the Labour Day public holiday, with decent weather across most of the state.

The hiker said the national park was packed because of the public holiday and many visitors were annoyed the picnicers had taken over the whole lookout

The post sparked debate about whether the family was being genuinely selfish or they were just oblivious that they were blocking the public lookout.

‘I’ve seen this happen before. I walked up and took photos. They then realised they were in the way, apologised, moved a little and we had a chat about the weather,’ one person wrote.

‘People just do dumb sh*t without taking into consideration other people,’ they added.

‘Just walk in between all their chairs and stand there looking at the view for as long as you want, it’s not theirs,’ another said.

‘I would have just taken a seat and joined them,’ added a third.

‘I lived on Maui in Hawaii and this type of behavior was constant by tourists,’ a fourth said.

‘Just rude,’ a fifth added.

Wilson’s Promontory is a popular spot for whale watching with southern right whales and humpback whales common in the area along with seals, dolphins and even penguins.
