An AFL-linked figure has been charged with raping a woman twice.

The man fronted Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Friday where his barrister successfully argued his name should be prevented from being published in the media until his next court date in July.

He is accused of raping his alleged victim twice on the night of Sunday January 14 this year, in Balwyn North in Melbourne’s east.

He was charged on summons by Box Hill’s Sexual Offences and Child Abuse Investigation Team on Friday, reports The Herald Sun.

The man is charged with two counts of rape and also two counts of intending to pervert the course of justice.

A man with links to the AFL has been charged with rape. He cannot be named for legal reasons

The secondary charges regard the man allegedly making a ‘false Uber’ the next day in an in attempt to hide the alleged acts.

He is also alleged to have told someone else to lie about his whereabouts and for them to suggest another person committed the alleged crimes.

It is understood psychiatric reports played a role in the man’s defense successfully arguing to have his identity suppressed as did an absence of criminal history.

Another member of the man’s family is also very well known in AFL circles which played a part in the order being granted.

The man was questioned by detectives earlier this year and appeared in court on Friday wearing a suit and tie hours after he was charged.

Bail was granted with conditions including that he remain in Australia.

He is set return to court in July.
