Americans slam the ‘confusing mess’ that is daylight savings in Australia: ‘I’m never travelling there, it’s stupid’

Americans are furious over the ‘confusing mess’ that is Australia’s daylight savings routine – with some claiming the disparate time zones have turned them off the country completely.

The conversation began when podcaster Jack Mac revealed his anger in a video.

‘Every time I’m reminded about how Australia does time zones I get mad for no reason,’ he said, pointing to a map of the country. ‘The daylight savings portion of this graphic makes me furious.’

‘Why are we doing 30-minute time zones?’ he asked about the Northern Territory and South Australia. ‘I know not many people live [in the middle of Australia] but why is it like that? Why is the top still 7:30 during daylight savings, but the bottom is 8:30?’

‘I’m never visiting Australia because of this. I just decided,’ he claimed.

Jack was also baffled that several parts of the country do not partake in daylight savings at all.

‘And this part is just keeping it 6pm no matter what,’ he said about Western Australia.

The US has nine different time zones compared to Australia’s five.

The time will be set back by 60 minutes in some parts of Australia from 2am to 3am on Sunday, April 7.

While New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania and the ACT all change the clocks at the beginning of October and the start of April – Western Australia, Queensland, and the NT refuse to make the change.

The main reason is while it’s great for nine-to-fivers and children playing after school, those who are employed in industries like agriculture and clock-on at 5am or earlier find it a major hindrance to work in the dark.

Warm, tropical climates are also not ideal for an extra hour of sunlight as many residents are looking to escape the sun, not spend another hour in it each day.

Americans still couldn’t wrap their heads around the ‘bizarre’ map.

‘I have nothing to do with this, but this needs to change,’ one said.

‘We need to get rid of daylight savings time altogether. I don’t care which hour we go with, but let’s just stay the course. And half time zones should not exist,’ another claimed.

A US man added: ‘The wildlife and insects pretty much made me never want to visit Australia, but the time zone graph put me firmly in the ‘not going to happen’. Also, I don’t want to be in a plane that long anyway.’
