Liverpool have been handed a fitness boost ahead of the Premier League title run-in with Andy Robertson avoiding any serious injury after the Scotsman hobbled off during the international break with ankle pains.

Robertson, 30, returned to Merseyside on Wednesday for scans and it appears the left back has avoided any serious, long-standing injury. He is still a doubt for the coming games, noting Liverpool play three in eight days from Sunday, but it is not expected to be a lengthy blow.

Seeing Robertson limp off the pitch during Scotland’s 1-0 defeat to Northern Ireland, where Reds team-mate Conor Bradley scored, was a case of deja vu for Liverpool fans after he returned from the autumn international camp with a dislocated shoulder.

That injury saw him miss three months of the season and need surgery. But this injury is said to be more of an impact-related knock, similar to the one Wataru Endo suffered in the Carabao Cup final that saw him miss a few days of training but return to the squad a week later.

But it appears this injury is better than first feared. Liverpool will now hope that Robertson’s ankle pain settles down in the coming days and that will dictate a realistic return date.

They are, though, hopeful to have several other key stars back for the visit of Brighton on Sunday. Curtis Jones stepped up his recovery from a six-week injury over the international break and could return to the Liverpool squad in the next couple of games.

Ryan Gravenberch and Darwin Nunez are OK again after also staying on Merseyside during the off-period. Mohamed Salah was exempted from Egypt duty and has been doing gym work during the break.

Diogo Jota and Trent Alexander-Arnold will not be fit for Sunday but have stepped up their recoveries and are not too far away from a return to first-team action.
