Are you still eligible for a stimulus check? These states are still sending them out in 2023 – here’s when you will receive yours

Millions of Americans are set to receive stimulus checks worth up to $1,000 – depending on their home state.

Government payments were commonplace during the Covid-19 pandemic, when millions of jobs were disrupted and households struggled to keep up with their budgets.

While the majority of pandemic-era aid has ended, some states are still giving out payments – mostly in the form of tax and property rebates.

New Mexico and Montana, for example, are able to issue rebates because they had surplus state budgets after taking in billions in pandemic relief from the federal government. Earlier this year, New Mexico started moves to return more than $673 million to residents’ pockets, according to the Associated Press.

Here are the states where Americans may still receive a check – and how much for.

Idaho

Idaho plans to send out approximately $500 million in 800,000 rebates by the end of this year, state officials announced in October 2022.

The 2022 Special Session rebate automatically goes to people who were full-year Idaho residents for 2020 and 2021 and who filed income tax returns for those years.

Individuals will receive $300, while families are set to receive $600 – or 10 percent of a taxpayer’s 2020 income taxes – whichever is greater.

Those who have not yet received the payment can track its progress on the official government site.

Illinois

The state announced last year that around six million residents would receive income and property tax rebates.

While the deadline was in October last year to submit details in order to qualify for the rebate, state tax officials warned it would likely take months for everyone to receive their checks.

The income tax rebate for individuals is $50, and up to $100 for couples who file jointly and up to $300 for families with dependents.

The property tax rebate is $300 maximum.

Massachusetts

The Bay State began paying tax refunds in November last year to 3 million eligible filers who wee entitled to a 14 percent rebate of their 2021 state income.

Any residents who have not yet filed their 2021 return have until September 15 to file their return and receive their share.

Minnesota

Eligible Minnesotans will receive a one-off direct rebate payments for the 2021 tax year after a recent update to state law.

The legislation, which was signed in May this year, provides payments of $520 for married couples filing a joint return with an income of $150,000 or less, or $260 for individuals with an income of $75,000 or less.

Residents can update their address or bank information on the official state portal if the details have changed since they filed their 2021 return.

Montana

Montana homeowners will receive up to $1,350 in property tax rebates in the next two years, Governor Greg Gianforte said last month.

‘Property taxes are too high, which is why we prioritized and secured immediate property tax relief for Montanans this legislative session,’ Governor Gianforte said.

‘Now, it’s time to build on reforms to reduce the burden of property taxes over the long term.’

In order to benefit, a person must have lived in or owned a Montana residence for at least seven months last year and paid property taxes on that residence.

Residents can apply starting on August 15, and all claims must be filed by October 1.

New Mexico

Late last month state officials began giving out ‘economic relief’ payouts of $500 or $1,000 – totaling $15 million – to more than 26,000 residents.

Low-income qualifying Americans should have received payments by direct deposit or mailed check, and an email notice was sent to applicants not receiving a payment.

‘We know many families are struggling, so it’s critical to provide some much-needed relief when prices have risen for food, energy and other necessities,’ said Taxation and Revenue Secretary Stephanie Schardin Clarke.

The state also sent out income tax rebates at the end of June of $500 or $1,000 to almost 1 million residents who filed a tax return in 2021, according to CBS.

Any state resident who has not yet filed a 2021 tax return has until May 31, 2024 to do so in order to receive a payout.

Washington

A Working Families Tax Credit is now available to low-income residents in the Evergreen State.

Depending on the number of dependents in the household the payment will vary between $50 and $1,200.

To be eligible, you must be a parent who has lived in Washington State for at least half the year in 2022 and filed a federal tax return for 2022.

Apply via the Department of Revenue Washington State through December 31, 2023.
