At least two people shot as an active shooter opens fire on the second floor of mall south of San Francisco – sparking a massive police response

  • An active shooter was reported Tuesday at The Shops at Tanforan in San Bruno 
  • San Francisco General told ABC7 they had two patients incoming with gunshot wounds but their conditions are unknown
  • The hospital also said others injured are going to other hospitals 
  • Witnesses claimed to have seen three people on the ground in handcuffs  
  • Details about the circumstances of the shooting are still emerging

As many as four people have reportedly been shot when a gunman opened fire at a mall south of San Francisco.  

The Shops at Tanforan in San Bruno is being evacuated Tuesday afternoon as emergency personnel responded to reports of shots fired at around 4pm local time. Witnesses reported hearing at least eight rounds near the Barnes & Noble bookstore. 

There have been conflicting reports about the number of victims, as some outlets say there were two and others reported four, along with three people in handcuffs. 

Police have not confirmed the witness information. Details about the circumstances of the shooting are still emerging.

San Francisco General told ABC7 they had two patients incoming with gunshot wounds but their conditions are unknown.

The hospital also said others injured are going to other hospitals – more may be trampling injuries or something else.

CitizenApp reported that a suspect fled on foot and is being pursued by SWAT officers.  

‘Please stay out of the Tanforan area – San Bruno Police Department is on scene investigating a shooting,’ the department tweeted. ‘We will update when we have more information. Thank you.’ 

Police urged people to stay out of the Tanforan Mall area, and the Bay Area Rapid Transit station in San Bruno has been closed with no trains passing through.  

Service south of the station has reportedly stopped, including to San Francisco International Airport.

The mall initially opened in 1971. It underwent a three-year reconstruction and reopened in 2005. It covers 973,500 sq ft over two floors. 

It has major retailers including Sears, JCPenney, Petco and Target and also has Century Theatres cinema. 

The shopping center in San Bruno is 10 miles south of San Francisco in the Peninsula of the Bay Area and just minutes away from San Francisco International Airport.
