Aussie sprinter Michelle Jenneke is sent flying during nasty fall in the 100m hurdles – and then nearly trips over the very next one in nightmare race

  • Michelle Jenneke suffered a nasty fall during the 100m hurdle heats this morning
  • She got back to her feet and immediately nearly fell over the next hurdle
  • Jenneke finished the race meaning she will get a second effort in the repechage

Australian hurdler Michelle Jenneke suffered a nasty looking fall during the 100m heats on Wednesday morning.

The 31-year-old was involved in the third heat and made a strong start over the first two hurdles before clattering into the third with her right leg.

She immediately lost balance after her collision with the hurdle, and was thrown forward and landed heavily on her left side.

Jenneke quickly got to her feet and attempted the next hurdle – in the lane of the runner on the right of her.

However, there was nearly a second disaster as she didn’t get the run up required for the hurdle, and she kicked it down but was able to stay on her feet and continue the race.

She was able to cross the finish line and as a result of finishing the race she will take part in the repechage later today – meaning she has a second chance of qualification.

Despite finishing the race in a different lane to the one she started, the Australian won’t receive a disqualification.

That’s because the athlete’s lane she finished the race in, had long gone past her and Jenneke didn’t interfere with their race.

Jenneke won silver at the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics and the 2016 Australian Athletics Championships, qualifying for the Rio Olympics.

She has also captured hearts with her trademark warm up dance before races.

One version of the video has had 27 million views on YouTube and made headlines across the world.

She recorded a personal best time of 12.65 ahead of the Games, a time which would have seen her qualify for the next round without having to do a repechage.

Jenneke enjoyed a successful modelling career that has included a major Coca-Cola sponsorship deal and an appearance on Top Gear.

That time makes her the second-fastest Australian women’s hurdler ever, behind only Sally Pearson, whose 12.28 from 2011 remains the national record.

Her heat was won by American star Masai Russell who finished in a time of 12.53.
