Australian website The Healthy Mummy reveal tricks to create a healthy fridge snack station for kids

How to make the perfect SNACK station: Organised mums reveal the very simple (and healthy) creations they use to keep the family satisfied

  • The Healthy Mummy community share their personal ‘snack stations’
  • The go-to snacks encourage kids to eat healthier foods and avoid sugar
  •  Foods can include and aren’t limited to fruits, boiled eggs and cheeses

Keeping kids away from sugary snacks has proven to be a difficult task for many parents – so a group of mums have created a simple and fun way to encourage children of all ages to eat healthier foods.

Women from The Healthy Mummy community in Australia have created versions of easy-to-do fridge snack stations, which allocates an area in the fridge to a variety of healthy snacks.

From fruit to cheeses, boiled eggs to vegetables and homemade muffins, the choices are up to your personal preference and dietary requirements.

Not only does the go-to healthy treat section limit kids eating artificial sugars contained in unhealthy foods, but it also allows parents to monitor what their children are eating.

Cassie McKay, a mother of two, understands the difficulty of encouraging children to eat healthy foods all too well, and was pleasantly surprised how much her kids enjoyed using the self-serve snack station.

‘I’ve shown them through everything and while they still have to ask if they can get something to eat, it gives them a sense of independence over what they get to eat.

What does the perfect school lunch sandwich contain?

* WHOLEGRAIN OR SOURDOUGH BREAD: Slow release carbohydrates help to stabilise blood sugar levels.

* PROTEIN: Lean meat, salmon, tuna, egg or tofu will help with alertness and endurance.

* HEALTHY FATS: Things like sunflower seeds, avocado and pumpkin seeds increase satiety, help to stabilise kids’ moods and boost their concentration.

* VEGETABLES X 2-3: Foods such as capsicum, carrot, mashed potato and cucumber contain fibre, vitamins and minerals kids need to keep their immune systems healthy.

‘I can see this being handy for heading out for a few hours or even a whole day as we can just grab a few things and go,’ she said.

The snacks of choice in Cassie’s fridge include grapes, carrot sticks, snow peas, capsicum, hummus and cheese (sticks and shredded) on the fridge door along with yoghurt, berries, sliced cheese and a healthy snack mix in the fridge drawer.

Some women who have tried the fridge snack station have even taken the idea a step further and organised their whole fridge by using multiple containers or created a snack station in their pantry too.

Predominantly focusing on weight loss, The Healthy Mummy website also supplies a range of healthy recipes for breakfast, dinner and smoothies as well as a 28 day workout challenge.

The Australian website founded by Rhian Allen is ideal for the everyday Mum and encourages healthy eating through their online community groups.

‘As a mum to 5, it is essential that all the yummy whole foods, I expect my little people to snack on are washed chopped and ready to go. I always buy a little extra fruit and veggie so they can pick what they want,’ she said.
