A ten-month-old boy is in intensive care after a senior nurse allegedly gave him an enema using scalding hot water in Kazakhstan.

Baby Nurislam was taken to hospital in the city of the Shymkent with a respiratory infection which doctors managed to treat, but which left him constipated.

As a result, medics prescribed him an enema, but mother Arainur Kalkaman said the boy started howling in pain as soon as it was administered.

Mrs Kalkaman demanded the nurse stop the procedure but claims the nurse refused to do so, saying ‘she knew better’.

After the procedure was finished, Mrs Kalkaman rushed to check on her crying child and saw that he was badly burned.

She said: ‘I saw that the skin on my son’s bottom was badly burned. His right buttock was covered with horrible giant blisters.

‘I cannot convey the horror that I experienced when I saw it. I stormed into the office of our doctor shouting that they had burned my son.’

Nurislam was rushed in the intensive care unit in a critical condition where he is still fighting for his life.

Arainur said she tried to stop the procedure as soon as her son started screaming but a senior nurse refused because 'she knew better'

His heartbroken parents are now pleading to the Kazakhstan Healthcare Minister Yelzhan Birtanov to intervene and provide their son with urgent medical care.

Nurislam’s father Yerbolit Samenov said: ‘Doctors do not say much and we do not know what the future holds for our son.

‘He was put in the intensive care unit last Thursday. Since then he has been living on painkillers.

‘All I know is that his condition is very grave. He is crying in pain and bleeding every time he needs to poo.’

The parents reported the incident to the police as an internal investigation has been launched in the hospital.

According to Amangeldy Nurlybaev, the head doctor of the hospital, a special commission, including the hospital top managers, has been created to investigate the incident.

The nurse who allegedly gave the child the scalding-hot water enema has been suspended. The police have not commented on the incident yet.
