Bafta suspends Harvey Weinstein’s membership

Harvey Weinstein with his Bafta best film award for Shakespeare In Love

Harvey Weinstein was today booted out of the British film industry as his membership was suspended by Bafta.

The fallen movie mogul was cast out of the prestigious British film academy after executives decided the sex allegations made him ‘unacceptable and incompatible with BAFTA’s values.’

The scandal-hit 65-year-old multi-millionaire is also faced with losing his BAFTA award given to him in 1999 for the film ‘Shakespeare in Love’ which starred Gwyneth Paltrow, who is one of his accusers.

Weinstein, who reportedly took a private jet to Europe where he will stay in a rehab clinic and receive therapy for sex addiction, is now barred from entering BAFTA’s London HQ.

The film boss is also barred from its glittering global receptions which include one called the ‘Britannias’ in Hollywood.

After being sacked by his own film company despite pleas for leniency and support, the Oscar winning producer now finds himself outcast from Britain’s inner film circle.

It will mean him being unable to set up a new company or work freely in Britain’s film studios.

Hollywood may also kick him out after three actresses accused him of raping them and several more said they had been the victims of his ‘unwanted’ sexual attention.

Paltrow said that Weinstein touched her and suggested having joint massages in the bedroom before she started shooting the 1996 film Emma. She said she told her then boyfriend Brad Pitt about the incident and he confronted the mogul.

Angelina Jolie said she had to turn down advances from Weinstein in 1998 and chose never to work with him again. She said she warned other women about him.

Tonight BAFTA told MailOnline: ‘In light of recent very serious allegations, BAFTA has informed Harvey Weinstein that his membership has been suspended, effective immediately.

‘Whilst BAFTA has previously been a beneficiary of Mr Weinstein’s support for its charitable work, it considers the reported alleged behaviour completely unacceptable and incompatible with BAFTA’s values.

‘This has led to Mr Weinstein’s suspension, and it will be followed by a formal process as laid out in BAFTA’s constitution.

‘We hope this announcement sends a clear message that such behaviour has absolutely no place in our industry.

‘BAFTA will continue to work with the film, games and television industries to improve access to rewarding and fulfilling careers in safe, professional working environments.’

His British wife Georgina Chapman, 41, has announced she was leaving him over the sexual allegations.

Chapman cited the alleged ‘unforgivable actions’ of her husband as a reason for leaving Weinstein.

‘My heart breaks for all the women who have suffered tremendous pain because of these unforgivable actions. I have chosen to leave my husband,’ she told People.

‘Caring for my young children is my first priority and I ask the media for privacy at this time.’

A family source said that the split had come ‘completely out of the blue’.

‘It’s not a good situation but she’s a very strong person, she’ll be fine,’ said the source. ‘They’re very private people, I don’t know a lot about it, but we’re a strong family and we’ll get through this. These things are never black and white.’

In a statement, Weinstein said: ‘I support her decision, I am in counseling and perhaps, when I am better, we can rebuild.’

He added: ‘Over the last week, there has been a lot of pain for my family that I take responsibility for. I sat down with my wife Georgina, who I love more than anything, and we discussed what was best for our family.

‘We discussed the possibility of a separation and I encouraged her to do what was in her heart. I understand, I love her and I love our children and hopefully, when I am better, I will be in their lives again.’

According to a TMZ source, the Weinstein is surprisingly calm about the chaos that has beset him this week.

‘He has his moments where there are bursts, but for the most part he’s pretty calm,’ the insider said.

Chapman met Weinstein in 2003 and they married four years later, going on to have two children, India Pearl, seven, and Dashiell Max Robert, four.

She is also the co-founder of high-end women’s fashion line Marchesa – and before the announcement of her split from Weinstein, sources said that she was struggling to save the brand from being tarnished by her husband’s allegations.
