Bayer Leverkusen jokingly mocked Arsenal after the Gunners shared a video of Dennis Bergkamp’s chip in a 4-1 win over the German club in the 2001/02 Champions League second group stage – as they failed to progress in the competition.
Bergkamp was on target with a typically sublime goal in the match, which took place 17 years ago to the day, but despite that victory his team would finish third in their group, while the German side would top it.
Bayer Leverkusen were not shy in pointing this out to the Premier League club in a tweet.

In that match, French trio Robert Pires, Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira were also on target, but it was in vain as their Champions League campaign ended in frustration.
Leverkusen would in fact go on to reach the Champions League final, where they lost to Real Madrid.

Despite the victory, Arsenal were unable to secure Champions League progress
That season, Arsenal had topped the first group stage of the competition and were then drawn with Deportivo La Coruna, Leverkusen and Juventus.
Shockingly, it was Arsenal and Juventus who missed out in that group, with the English team losing home and away to Deportivo and in Italy while only managing a draw in Germany.
