Ben Goldsmith reveals trolls are targeting him over death of his daughter

Heartbroken father Ben Goldsmith has revealed trolls are posting anti-Semitic abuse and conspiracy theories on social media about the death of his daughter.

The millionaire financier, 38, has discovered ‘countless, appallingly upsetting tweets’ involving 15-year-old Iris, who died in a quad bike accident at his farm in North Brewham, Somerset.

Mr Goldsmith today posted a series of messages on Twitter, saying he had ‘the more I looked, the more I found’ and decided to share the abuse to ‘call these people out.’

He wrote: ‘A glimpse into the dark world of anti-Semitic/‘Illuminati’ conspiracy theory: countless appallingly upsetting tweets about the death of my teenage daughter Iris.

Mr Goldsmith tweeted: ‘I loved her with the utmost love of which my soul is capable, and she is taken from me. Yet in the agony of my spirit in surrendering such a treasure, I feel a thousand times richer than if I had never possessed it.’ William Wordsworth, after the death of his child’

‘I’ve reported some of these but there are so many, and in any case they don’t break @Twitter rules apparently.’

After retweeting an abusive post, which was later deleted, he wrote:  ‘This tweet has now been deleted but there are many many more.

‘This is nothing as compared with the sadness we feel for our loss. I just thought I’d call these people out. That’s all. Thank you all for your kindness.’

He added: ‘To be clear, I have not had any abuse directed at me personally.

‘I happened to come across loads of conspiracy theory tweets about the whole thing. The more I looked the more I found.’

Iris was the first child of environmentalist and finance boss Mr Goldsmith and his former wife Kate Rothschild who are understood to have a joint fortune of over £300million.

The former couple also have two sons; Frank and Isaac.

Mr Goldsmith is the younger brother of Conservative MP Zac Goldsmith and documentary-maker Jemima Khan.

Mr Goldsmith and Ms Rothschild separated in 2012 when she began a relationship with U.S rapper Jay Electronica.

Iris was studying at Wycombe Abbey, a £12,980-a-term independent girls’ boarding school in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, consistently ranked as the top all-girls school nationally in academic results.

A conscientious and popular pupil, she had just completed her first year of studying for GCSEs, and was just starting the summer break at her father’s farm when the accident took place.

In the days after her death on July 8, Mr Goldsmith wrote a heart-wrenching message on Twitter pleading with God for his daughter to be returned to him.

He wrote: ‘Dear God, please can I have my beautiful, brilliant, kind little girl back, please God.

‘And if not, please take extra special care of her. I love her so so much and I’m so proud of her. It hurts me so much I can’t describe.’

Iris was laid to rest in private funeral at St Mary’s Church in Barnes, south-west London, last month.

Her grief-stricken father and younger brother Frankie, 13, were pictured fighting back tears as they led pallbearers in carrying her coffin.

In an emotional eulogy, Iris’s heartbroken mother Kate Rothschild said the family have been torn apart by her death.

She said: ‘I can’t possibly begin to explain the ocean of grief we find ourselves in or the feeling of being shattered into a thousand unfindable pieces.

‘And even harder than that would be to explain her, to really do her justice. She was simply spectacular, her light was brighter than any I’ve ever known. She was just magical, but there aren’t enough words, or I don’t know how to find them at least.’

The incident on the family farm near the village of North Brewham, Somerset, was not treated as suspicious by police.

An inquest into Iris’s death heard last month that the Goldsmith heiress died when an off-road farm bike she was driving overturned on the family estate.

The exact cause of her death is still unclear but post mortem toxicology tests are being carried out. The senior coroner for Somerset, Tony Williams, formally opened the inquest at Taunton Coroner’s Court but none of Iris’s family attended the three-minute hearing.

Mr Goldsmith was playing cricket at Charterhouse School in Godalming, Surrey, when he took a phone call saying she had been injured.

He was only a few minutes into the 96-mile journey home when he learned his precious daughter had been killed.

Paramedics and the crew of an air ambulance tried to save her but Iris was declared dead at the scene.
