Mounted police are a common sight patrolling the streets of Australian cities, but their country colleagues can be a little more creative.

NSW Police shared a photo of an officer riding cattle at the Nowra Show in the regional town on the state’s south coast on Sunday.

Either a bull or a steer, the unconventional mount was draped with high-vis police livery and a saddle for the officer to ride in comfort.

The mounted officer was kitted out in a helmet and long riding boots that fit into stirrups to better steer the animal after suspects.

The horned helper did not seem to mind his new job, standing patiently on the grass while his rider posed for a photo.

Viewers of the police Facebook page joked the animal was drafted in to enforce ‘mooo-ve on orders’ or for an undercover ‘steak out’.

NSW Police said it was just a ‘gag photo’. ‘Unfortunately we’re not upgrading the old equipment,’ it joked.
