Brendan Rodgers’s job is on the line with a fortnight ahead at Leicester during international break

MATT BARLOW: Brendan Rodgers’ job is on the line with a tense fortnight ahead at Leicester during the international break… he has the protection of a lucrative contract until 2025 but clear signs of dissent from fans are beginning to show

  • Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers is facing the sack after another defeat
  • The Foxes were well-beaten by Tottenham as they remain winless in the league
  • Rodgers however is convinced he can help the club change its current fortunes

Brendan Rodgers goes into the international break with his job on the line after his Leicester team capitulated to concede six at Tottenham, crashing to a sixth straight defeat that leaves them rock bottom with one point.

Pressure is mounting on Rodgers with clear signs of dissent from some fans in the away end at the final whistle two weeks after his team leaked five in a defeat at Brighton.

They have leaked 22 goals in seven games this season and Spurs fans taunted the Leicester boss with a chorus of ‘sacked in the morning’ as they stretched clear in the final 20 minutes of the game, with Son Heung-min coming off the bench to score a hat-trick.

Brendan Rodgers has admitted he will ‘respect’ Leicester City’s decision over his future

It promises to be a tense fortnight at the King Power before they return to action in an East Midlands clash with fellow strugglers Nottingham Forest.

‘I don’t know, to be honest,’ said Rodgers when asked if he expected Leicester’s owners to stick with him. ‘Whatever their decision is, I’ll always respect it. I feel in the team tonight you watched them play in the first half, you can see the confidence in the team, the creativity in the team, the pressing in the team, it’s just cutting out the mistakes.

‘There’s no doubt first seven games, we’ve had a tough start especially after the summer that we have had. Tottenham away, Arsenal away, Chelsea away and Manchester United at home.

‘It [the int break] has probably come at a good time to reset everything and break the cycle of the summer as well. And there’s lot of this game that was very good for us.

‘The owners will do what it is that they feel they need to do. I’m not daft I know football. Losing the last six games doesn’t make great reading.’

Rodgers has the protection of a lucrative contract until 2025 and credit remaining from the success he has achieved since arriving from Celtic in February 2019.

He has led them to their first FA Cup win, two fifth-place finishes and the semi-finals of a European competition but winning the Premier League title failed to exempt Claudio Ranieri from the sack.

But Rodgers remained defiant when asked if he could turn in around.

‘Yeah. 100 per cent,’ he said. ‘You didn’t see a team playing tonight with no conviction, no authority, no bravery. You’ve seen a team that is doing everything to get back in the game and leaving themselves a little bit open.

Rodgers however still believes he will be able to turn the tide and get Leicester back on track

‘But I’ve every confidence and it’s a challenge I relish because I’ve never had this spell I my career before It’s something I definitely do want to continue.

From a coaching perspective, there were a lot of good moments and if we take that into the next game against Notts Forest, have reset, that game is a big opportunity at home to get the first win and from that we get a run of fixtures to accumulate points.

I don’t want to focus too much on the summer. I can only look forward now. We had to go through it it was a challenge but now we can only go forward. I’ve every confidence that the team can push on and if they play like the did for large parts of this, we’ll climb higher in table.’
