A bride has revealed how she made a surprising entrance to her wedding in a helicopter after a horror fuel tanker crash blocked the route to the venue.

Maleea Forbes, from Queensland, nearly missed her own ceremony to marry her groom Scott on Saturday after the lanes between Brisbane and Gold Coast were shut in both directions on the highway following a multi-vehicle crash.

Trying to remain calm about the situation, her quick-thinking father John saved his daughter’s special day by hiring a last-minute chopper for the bridal party.

‘Dad approached me, and said “look there’s been a really bad accident… a lot of guests are struggling to get to the wedding, it’s taking people hours so if we drive, you’re going to be an hour late to your wedding”,’ she told Sunrise.

‘Then he said “no, wait. I’ve got another option for you. I’ve got a helicopter on standby if you want to take that in case.” I thought he was joking but he wasn’t.’

The bride – who has a fear of flying – decided to surprise her husband-to-be by arriving at the altar in a helicopter with her father and four bridesmaids.

‘It took me about 10 or 15 minutes to decide if we’d do it or not. As soon as I said “alright dad, let’s take the helicopter”, all the bridesmaids got so excited,’ she said.

‘I think that kind of took away my nerves. I know walking down the aisle is probably the part where most people are more nervous about in their wedding – but for me, it was getting there – it was the most nerve-wrecking part.

Her now-husband Scott said his bride sent him a text message explaining she was running late but was going to arrive in a helicopter.

‘I got a text message from Maleea saying “there’s a bit of traffic, we might be coming in by helicopter”. I thought she was just pulling my leg,’ he said.

‘But I said “take as much time as you need, I’ll still be here waiting”. Luckily it all worked out.’

His bride added: ‘It definitely wasn’t as glamorous as it sounds though.’
