British expat father’s eight-month-old baby girl dies and mother injured in freak accident

  • Accident happened in Spanish town of Premia de Dalt around 8am this morning
  • Mother, believed to be a 35-year-old German national, was taken to hospital
  • Local council chiefs suspended annual festival and declared days of mourning

A British expat’s eight-month-old daughter has died in a freak accident involving the family van which also injured her mother.

The Spanish of town of Premia de Dalt, which is north of Barcelona, has declared two days of mourning after the youngster was killed.

It is believed that the mother and daughter were hit by the van after the handbrakes were left off.   

The youngster’s mother, said to be a 35-year-old German national, was injured trying to save her daughter’s life and was taken to hospital. The baby’s father, who is believed to be British, was unhurt.

The incident happened around 8am this morning near a children’s playground in Premia de Dalt.

The couple are believed to have lived in the area for some time.

Local council chiefs announced earlier today that they were suspending the local annual festival.

The council said in a press release: ‘This morning a tragic accident has occurred which has caused the death of a child and seriously injured her mother.

‘For reasons that are still under investigation, a parked van has run over the lady and the youngster.

‘The eight-month-child has died as a result of the incident and the woman has been taken to Germans Trias Hospital in Badalona.’
