British expat Olan Tekker shares the biggest cultural differences between Australia and the UK

British expat, 28, lists the three huge differences between England and Australia – but not every one is happy about them

  • Olan Tekker said Aussies are nicer than Brits
  • He thought the work-life balance and weather was better too

A British expat has shared the three main differences he’s noticed between Australia and England.

Olan Tekker, 28, has been living in Sydney for three years and said the weather and work-life balance is better and the people are nicer in Australia compared to his home country.

He said Aussies are much nicer than the people in London and was shocked when his neighbour kindly brought his food order to him when it was delivered to the wrong address.

Olan also said he prefers the work-life balance in Australia compared to the UK where people ‘work like slaves’.

Hundreds agreed with the Brit’s takes but some where offended by his claim Aussies ‘don’t work’.

Olan said after three years in Australia he thinks he’s ‘got a good scope on the situation’ in a video posted to TikTok.

‘I’m going to always say this, the people are just nicer. You can’t really explain it but when you go out in public or you go out somewhere you’ll just notice,’ he said.

‘People in London don’t give a f*** about you, everyone’s got somewhere to be.’

Olan said he ordered food to his apartment as he couldn’t walk from having surgery on his leg but it was delivered to the wrong address so his neighbour brought it to him.

‘You reckon that’s happening in England? People are just leaving the food outside to rot,’ he said.

‘I’m not even going to talk about the weather because that’s just an obvious one,’ he added.

Olan said the work-life balance in Australia is ‘tremendous’.

‘In Australia you don’t really work, I’m not going to lie to you,’ he said.

‘Friday, nothing’s getting done, you lot are going to the beach, you lot are going for a couple of drinks, nothing’s getting done. In England, man are working like slaves.’

The expat’s clip drew in thousands of views and divided many in the comments as some agreed with his point of view.

‘Totally agree, I moved to Brisbane last June from London, it’s amazing,’ one viewer replied.

Olan said the work-life balance is 'tremendous' but angered some Aussie viewers by saying people in Australia 'don't work'

‘I think the weather has a lot to do with the way of life here. Beaches everywhere and good weather almost always,’ another added,

‘The work-life balance is so true. I’m taking a half-day Friday to go to Kevin Hart. It starts at 8 and I finish at 12,’ laughed a third.

‘Our tiler left our job to go surfing on a hot day. Came back two days later to finish it,’ a Queenslander said.

Someone added the ‘food and coffee culture’ is also much better in Australia however many weren’t happy with Olan’s claim Aussies ‘don’t really work’.

‘I’m an Aussie living in London – with the work/life balance, I would say we work smart and play hard compared to Londoners,’ one woman said.

‘Don’t agree about the work bit. We are the ultimate slaves. We working ourselves to the ground,’ an angered viewer wrote.

‘You think people here don’t work their a**es off? Lol,’ asked another.

‘Don’t work as much as England. Probably work smarter,’ Olan responded.
