Bush fire in Coogee forces hundreds out on to the streets

  • A large bush fire is burning between Coogee and Gordon’s Bay in Sydney’s east

A huge blaze is burning along the coast of one of Sydney’s most popular beaches.

The large bush fire is burning about 200 metres of land between Coogee and Gordon’s Bay.

Thick billows of smoke are engulfing the streets of Sydney’s eastern suburbs forcing hundreds of people out on to the street.

Firefighters have been fighting the ‘hectic fire’ Saturday afternoon which residents described as ‘pretty scary’ like ‘a big explosion’. 

‘Never seen anything like this in Coogee,’ one person wrote online.  

While the popular beach side suburb isn’t known for it’s bushfires, thick plumes of smoke were seen from a number of locations along the coast.

At least three fire crews and a number of helicopters are fighting the grass fire.
