California wildfire tears through Santa Ana Mountains

More than 1,500 residents have been evacuated as dangerous wildfires took hold in southern California, threatening to raze everything in their path.

The fast-moving blaze has overcome 2,000 acres of the Santa Ana Mountains near Corona, exacerbated by winds and temperatures above 86f.

At least 300 firefighters have been working through the night to douse flames and make sure residents reach the safety of four high schools used as evacuation points.

They used helicopters and planes to drop water and bulldozers to shovel earth in a bid to stop the fire advancing.

One resident who was evacuated, Cora Angeles, told the LA Times: ‘We don’t know what’s going to happen. At least we know we’re going to be alive because we got out of there in time.’ There have been no reports of injuries.
