Channel 4 to cut 200 jobs amid advertising slowdown

Channel 4 plans to slash hundreds of jobs as it tightens the purse strings in the face of an advertising slowdown. 

Chief executive Alex Mahon told staff yesterday that the broadcaster needs to get into the ‘right shape and the right size for the digital world’ for the next decade. 

This means up to 200 jobs will be cut across the 1,200- strong workforce.  Channel 4 has come under growing pressure as major advertisers trim spending amid high interest rates and inflation. 

‘What we are doing now is accelerating our existing plans to weather the sharp and protracted advertising slowdown that has hit the whole industry,’ Mahon told staff, adding she was ‘sorry that some job cuts will inevitably be involved’. 

It is understood the layoffs will mainly hit London-based staff
