Charlton Athletic look to sign journeyman midfielder Ryan Tunnicliffe as Dean Holden aims to build on 10th-placed finish in League One

Charlton Athletic are hoping to make Ryan Tunnicliffe their second signing of the summer.

The former Manchester United and Fulham midfielder has been released by Portsmouth and a couple of clubs are showing interest.

Addicks manager Dean Holden has already brought in goalkeeper Harry Isted, 26, after his release from Luton Town, and now he is targeting 30-year-old Tunnicliffe.

The midfielder has turned out for 11 teams over the years and has rarely stayed long at one club.

He was a regular feature in John Mousinho’s squad towards the end of this season as Pompey pushed for the League One play-offs.

Charlton are looking to bolster their ranks after they stumbled to 10th in the third tier in 2022/23, sacking Ben Garner along the way.

Isted is a good addition, having been a regular in Barnsley’s charge to the League One play-off final after joining on loan from Luton in January.

Holden only joined the London outfit in December himself, but stablised the club’s league form and helped them lose only three of their last 12 fixtures.

The club were the only team outside the top flight to reach the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup, getting past Brighton on penalties in the fourth round before losing 3-0 to Manchester United.
