Christmas Day lunch sees excited dad pranked by his family

Imagine winning £50,000 while being surrounded by your family on Christmas Day and jumping for joy, celebrating your success with the people you love most.

Then, imagine having it all ripped away because those same people have played a prank on you.

It’s just as well this father has a good sense of humour.

Andrew Howell from Bynea, Carmarthenshire, Wales thought he had a slice of Christmas Day magic after being given a scratchcard which revealed he had won £50,000 – only for him to be told he was the victim of a family prank.

Mr Howell was filmed leaping into the air with joy, believing he had won the cash during Christmas lunch.

His excitement was captured on camera by his family, who were all in on the trick, with Mr Howell delightedly waving his card around and asking relatives to check he hadn’t made a mistake.

The father’s heartwarming reaction saw him shouting in joy and jumping up and down.

At one point, he gets so excited that he grabs the door frame and lifts himself into the air.

He also sang and danced in and out of the family’s dining room.

Unfortunately for the father, he was brought crashing back down to Earth after being told he was the victim of a joke.

Wife Christine, who was in on the prank, said: ‘It was my son-in-law’s idea.

‘He bought the fake ticket on the internet back in August or September, and has been waiting to give it to Andrew over Christmas.

Mr Howell kept re-reading the scratch card in shock and asked some of his relatives to confirm that he had won the £50,000

‘We always have a scratchcard over Christmas lunch, we do it once a year.

‘Andrew was swinging from the door frame. My son-in-law was filming it all from behind a napkin.

‘At first he thought he’d won five pounds, and he was excited at that.

‘Then he checked the three columns which said he had won £50,000. He was dancing around for two or three minutes, and I began to think, who is going to break the news to him now?

In a heartbreaking moment, Mr Howell is told his scratch card is different and he says: 'Oh it's not a joke?'

‘We had to show him that his scratchcard was different to ours – he said ‘don’t tell me it is a joke’.

‘But he took it well. He is used to us playing jokes on him, he is an easy target.

‘We’ve caught him out on April Fools Day before now. But he’s sworn revenge.’

Matthew Hughes, who planned the stunt, added: ‘He’s only just forgiven us, but to be fair he is a good sport. ‘But he does say he’s going to get his own back.’
