CITY WHISPERS: Bernard Looney’s ex-wife sends her Christmas message

’Tis the season for merrymaking but also for round-ups of 2023 from analysts.

Among the missives is one from broker Liberum, whose analysts Andrew Ripper and Caspar Erskine were doling out awards for the tech and media sectors last week.

Gongs included ‘player of the year’, bestowed on Zillah Byng-Thorne for her stints as chair of review site Trustpilot and executive chair of ad agency M&C Saatchi.

There was also ‘theme of the year’, scooped by the rise of artificial intelligence after shares soared in the likes of Nvidia and Microsoft.

Less happy to receive an award will be GB Group, a Chester-based fraud prevention firm, which Liberum dubbed the most likely bid target.

One more thing…

Christmas is understandably a quiet one in the Square Mile, with traders and executives usually too busy digesting turkey and mulled wine to make major announcements.

But a handful of companies have decided it is the perfect time to hold their annual general meeting.

Those in the diary next week include ad tech firm Tremor, stock market data group ADVFN, and SkinBioTherapeutics.

Christmas also tends to be a time when firms sneak out bad news, aware that many people are too distracted by the festivities to notice.

This column, however, remains alert all year round. Firms, you have been warned.
