Cody Simpson attempts to downplay purported ‘pool love triangle’ with Emma McKeon and Kyle Chalmers

Cody Simpson downplays purported ‘pool love triangle’ with girlfriend Emma McKeon and her ex Kyle Chalmers and insists the teammates are ‘supportive of each other’

Cody Simpson addressed rumours on Saturday about the purported ‘pool love triangle’ affecting him, Emma McKeon and Kyle Chalmers.

He defiantly insisted everything is fine and said the perceived conflict is not affecting their performance at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

The 25-year-old swimmer is currently dating five-times Olympic Games gold medalist Emma McKeon, who was previously involved with swimming champion Kyle Chalmers.

Cody said the trio were able to put aside their personal feelings and focus on the competition.

‘I don’t know. We’re all teammates’ Cody told the publication.

‘I’m not sure how she or he were dealing with that, but backstage and in the warm up we’ve all been teammates and supportive of each other, sort of regardless of whatever may have been.

‘I can only speak of what I’ve seen of Emma’s and so far we’re all doing pretty well.’

The pop star added: ‘We just sort of do all the usual teammate stuff and we’re just supportive of each other’.

Rumours, however, have swirled Kyle harboured a degree of resentment towards ex-girlfriend Emma, if his frosty conduct on the first night of competition at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games is any guide.

The star performers in the pool were two members of the 4x100m mixed freestyle relay who won gold, but the tension between the former couple was obvious in Birmingham.

Australia were the only nation not to hold hands and raise them in unison pre-race, and the body language between Chalmers and McKeon – who won four gold medals at the Tokyo Olympics – was forced.

Olympic silver medalist James Magnussen said the personal conflict has clearly made it into the pool, stating he observed noticeable tension between Emma and and ex-boyfriend Kyle.

Magnussen, however, believes the ‘media juggernaut’ that will descend on the trio this week is ‘exactly what the sport needs in Australia’.

‘Whether you’re talking about the supposed love triangle in the team with Cody, Emma McKeon and Kyle Chalmers, or just the sheer magnitude of what Cody has done in the pool, it has brought eyeballs to swimming,’ he wrote for News Limited.

‘I know it hasn’t pleased everyone, but sometimes when it’s your time in the sport as an athlete it is hard to see the bigger picture.’
