A convicted double murderer was asked to leave a popular gay nightclub twice because he’d had too much to drink during a 24-hour manhunt.

Damien Anthony Peters, 50, who cut off his ankle bracelet prompting a nation-wide manhunt reportedly partied at the Stonewall Hotel, a gay nightclub on Oxford Street in Sydney, on Saturday and Sunday night.

He went missing at 4.15pm on Sunday at Randwick’s Prince of Wales Hospital and was arrested in Petersham in Sydney’s inner-west shortly before 5pm the next day.

Double murderer Damien Peters was kicked out of gay nightclub Stonewall because the manager was concerned he had too much to drink. Staff had no idea about his criminal past

‘He was here on Saturday night and Sunday night and he was asked to leave both times,’ the club’s manager said to the Sydney Morning Herald.

The manager asked Peters to leave because he had too much to drink at midnight on Sunday and did not know about his murderous history.

‘He left straight away. We didn’t even get one look and he was gone,’ she said.

NSW Police launched a manhunt that lasted 24 hours after they allegedly found his monitoring device four hours after he went missing later in Kensington.

‘Police from the Surry Hills and Redfern Region Enforcement Squads, Operation Odin and the dog unit moved in to effect the arrest in Church Street, Petersham, without incident,’ a NSW Police statement read.

Peters was taken to the Newtown Police Station, where inquiries are continuing.

Earlier in the day, Detective Superintendent Rohan Cramsie told reporters: ‘It would appear as though the ankle monitoring bracelet has been forcibly removed, possibly cut.’

Peters pleaded guilty to murdering and dismembering two of his male lovers in his Surry Hills flat in 2001 and was jailed for 21 years, with a non-parole period of 13 years, in 2002.

The court heard Peters, then 32, had stabbed Tereaupii Akai, 50, twice in the neck before cutting up his body and throwing it in a council bin.

About eight months later, Peters stabbed 57-year-old Bevan James Frost to death while giving him a massage in bed before cutting up his body.

Detectives investigating Mr Akai’s disappearance found Mr Frost’s remains in the bath in Peters’ flat.
