A police officer who brutally punched a driver through a window at the scene of a crash was allegedly reacting to a wine bottle being thrown at him by the driver.

The shocking incident occurred around 1.45pm on Thursday along Gympie Rd, Strathpine in Brisbane’s north.

‘Police will allege the man was drinking from a wine bottle and was under the influence of the substance,’ a statement from Queensland Police said.

Emergency services responded to the crash which resulted in two other cars being impacted.

The man was ‘highly agitated’ and after being told to stay in the car it is alleged he repeatedly tried to leave by kicking the door into the responding officer who used ‘physical force to contain the man’.

‘Additional officers arrived on scene and another officer was allegedly spat on by the man.

‘He was then taken in custody and transported by ambulance to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s hospital for treatment to minor cuts, where he remains.

‘Senior police have reviewed body worn footage of the incident.’
