Coronation Street’s Andy Whyment ‘to appear on I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here spin-off’

Coronation Street star Andy Whyment is reportedly heading back into the I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! camp for the upcoming spin-off show.

The actor, 41, who plays Kirk Sutherland on the ITV soap, finished in second place in 2019 behind winner Jacqueline Jossa, 29.

And he is due to now appear on the new version of the show which is set to be filmed in South Africa, with a TV source telling The Sun: ‘Andy is hugely popular with audiences, who love his down-to-earth nature and sense of humour.

‘He’s the perfect antidote to some of the divas and egos who are likely to be in the final line-up and producers are keen to strike the right balance.’

MailOnline has contacted ITV for comment.

A long line of former jungle stars are reportedly set to appear including the likes of model Janice Dickinson, actress Helen Flanagan, Princess Diana’s former butler Paul Burrell, boxer Amir Khan, former EastEnders cast member Dean Gaffney, Diversity dancer Ashley Banjo, and ex Made in Chelsea star Georgia Toffolo.

Andy’s fellow former Coronation Street actress Helen Flanagan, 32, entertained viewers when she appeared on the show in 2012 – and it is claimed she is taking part in the spin-off 10 years after first taking part.

A source told the The Sun: ‘It has taken months of negotiations because it is a big decision to spend so long away from her young children but she has finally come around to the idea.

‘Helen is an absolute catch for ITV and they are thrilled she is finally on board.’

They added: ‘She was brilliant telly back in 2012 and is bound to be just as entertaining this time around — especially if she gets voted into doing the trials again.’

The all-star spin off show is set to run alongside the normal series of the show in 2023, with the programme filmed in South Africa.

With 230 celebrities having competed across 20 series, MailOnline has taken a look at which memorable contestants could try their luck again in the spin-off.

Viewers delighted in watching Gillian McKeith scream with terror as she faced trial after trial after trial, bringing back barely any food which led to rising tensions in the camp back in 2010.

But it was clear the stars were thrilled when Gillian was forced to pull out of the trial for ‘fainting,’ with Linford Christie taking her place and earning close to a full house.

It’s been disputed down the years whether Gillian’s faint was real, with Britt Ekland declaring: ‘She’s maybe as good of an actress as I am.’

The writer proved to be one of the series’ standout stars as she was exposed for smuggling condiments into camp using specially-made underwear.

I’m A Celebrity’s third instalment is thought by many to be the one that took it from popular reality show to ITV juggernaut, as it saw the birth of the one of the most iconic marriages in celebrity history.

Despite being from polar opposite worlds, they went onto marry a year after leaving the show, before divorcing in 2009.

Stacey Solomon won in 2010, while her fiancé Joe Swash coincidentally also took on the winning title in 2008, before going on to host the Extra Camp after show.

Despite admitting she ‘could be like Bear Grylls’ once she got into the jungle, TOWIE star Gemma Collins struggled to make it that far, as she broke down in tears mere seconds after stepping into the helicopter in 2014.

After eventually arriving in the jungle, Gemma failed to settle in the camp life, admitting she was convinced she had malaria, and quit after just two days.

Thanks to the inclusion of Lady C, 2015’s I’m A Celebrity was the show’s most tumultuous yet, as she repeatedly argued with stars Tony Hadley and Duncan Bannatyne before dramatically quitting the show.

She didn’t hold back in sharing her views on the stars, and even refused to take part in trials simply out of spite.

2006 saw the birth of an I’m A Celebrity staple – the bikini shower scene – as singer Myleene Klass made headlines with her incredible white two-piece as she cleaned herself under the jungle shower.

Soap star Helen Flanagan reportedly annoyed producers and even hosts Ant and Dec by quitting numerous challenges without even giving them a try, causing tension in the camp as the celebrities went without food for nearly 10 days.

But it seemed miracles could happen in the jungle, as Helen magically overcame her fears during her sixth trial Deadly Delivery which saw her bring back 12 stars for the camp, in 2012.

EastEnders actress Danniella Westbrook quit the show after just nine days in 2003 after begging viewers to vote her out, admitting she’d rather be in Holloway Prison then spend another day in the camp.

The third series saw a record-breaking 14 million viewers watch Atomic Kitten star Kerry Katona be crowned series champion, making her the show’s first Queen of the Jungle.

A brand new all stars version of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! is set to be filmed in South Africa.

The new stand alone show will run in addition to the usual annual ITV programme – which is set to return to the Australian jungle this year after two years in Wales – and is likely to air next summer.

Channel bosses have signed up Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly, both 46, to host the show and legendary contestants from the past will compete, taking part in trials while living in camp.

A source told MailOnline: ‘The team behind I’m A Celebrity are making a brand new spin off of the hit series featuring the most loved, favourite campmates from previous years.

‘The campmates will be doing trials and living in the camp environment, but with fresh and exciting new twists, and they will have a hand in their own destiny through a series of internal votes and challenges.

‘The new edition is likely to air in 2023 but before that viewers will get to enjoy the show’s much anticipated return to Australia in November.’

The spin-off won’t have any sort of public vote as in other series.

A source told MailOnline: ‘The show is still very much based in the world of I’m A Celebrity – the camp mates will be doing trials and living in the camp environment, but with fresh and exciting new twists on the format.

‘The camp mates will have a hand in their own destiny through a series of internal votes and challenges.’

It’s thought the new spin-off will be a slightly shorter format of two weeks instead of the usual three.

The new pre-recorded show will either air in November or kept back to be broadcast in early 2023.

The main reality show is returning to the Australian jungle for the first time in three years after it was held in Gwrych Castle in North Wales due to travel restrictions caused by the pandemic.
