Holiday hell? Sunloungers! Countryfile presenter Anita Rani recalls her travel adventures

Countryfile presenter Anita Rani

So which destination is the TV presenter’s most memorable?

Here she talks about how she fell in love with New York, her favourite place for a UK staycation and more…

Most memorable place travelled?

My husband (technology executive Bhupi Rehal) and I went to Sri Lanka at the beginning of the year. It’s the perfect holiday destination.

Why was it special?

It has everything. Culture, history, great food, beautiful beaches, incredible wildlife and amazing scenery.

Favourite place in UK?

Yorkshire. It’s the largest and most beautiful county — whether you’re in the Dales or on the North York Moors, having Sunday lunch in a country pub, enjoying an historic visit to York, or eating the best fish and chips in Whitby.

Most memorable meal?

I’m a massive foodie. One of the most memorable meals was while filming in Cyprus. We were in a place run by the cousin of someone on the team. The food was unbelievable and plentiful — salads, grilled fish, meat. And the setting and hospitality made it stand out.

What do you never travel without?

My black eyeliner and a couple of fab dresses. I love dressing for dinner. It’s a trick I learnt from a cameraman, no matter where we were, even in the middle of nowhere in Russia or China, he still arrived at dinner in a crisp white shirt. Nice touch.

Earliest holiday memory?

Love affair: Anita's earliest holiday memory is visiting New York, above, aged nine

Love affair: Anita’s earliest holiday memory is visiting New York, above, aged nine

Going to New York aged nine. I’ll never forget the drive from JFK airport through Manhattan, my face pressed up against the car window. Everything was just like in the movies. Steam coming out of manholes, basketball courts next to the road and drinks being consumed in paper bags. I’ve loved New York ever since.

Favourite hotel?

In the UK, we escape to Lime Wood in Hampshire.

Where next?

I fancy Bhutan because I’m a mountain lover. Plus a driving holiday round California has to be done.

Holiday hell?

Sunloungers.
