Denman earthquake, NSW: Magnitude 5.0 earthquake rocks the area on Australia’s east coast – with Sydney residents reporting tremors

  • Magnitude 5.0 earthquake hits Denman, NSW 

A magnitude 5.0 earthquake has been reported near Denman, NSW – with Australians living hours away in Sydney feeling tremors. 

The quake was recorded by science agency Geoscience Australia (GA).

Denman is located a three-hour drive north-west of Sydney, and about 135km west of the city of Newcastle. 

Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology posted on X that the earthquake posed no tsunami threat at Australia’s land borders. 

The earthquake was reported to have occurred at a depth of 10km and 14km to the east of Denman, according to the GA website. 

Sydney residents reported feeling shakes. ‘My apartment just moved.. who else felt it (earthquake) in Sydney?!’ posted one.

‘Was there just an earthquake in Sydney or did my building just shake for fun?!’ 

A third said: ‘Just felt an actual earthquake in Sydney. Wall mounted TV was shaking as was the bed I was sitting on. Wild!’

Regional NSW residents closer to the epicentre, in Mudgee and Gulgong – two hours drives west of Denman – reported walls and floors shaking. 

‘Dogs were barking… scared the crap out of them,’ one person posted. 

Others further west at Dunedoo and someone at Anna Bay, north of Newcastle on the coast also reported feeling tremors.

Residents in Newcastle suburbs also felt the quake.

‘Rattled the things on my table at Swansea Heads,’ commented one person. ‘Didn’t even occur to me that it was an earthquake.’ 

‘Thought my house was going to fall down… I’m in Muswellbrook, we have had 2 aftershocks so far, south side of town lost power,’ posted another person. 

On X Anna Edwards posted pictures of walls cracking in her house as a result of the earthquake.

‘Well that was the first time I’ve really felt an earthquake!! The house shook, the walls cracked. Wild!’ 

Lavis Mitre 10 in Muswellbrook posted a photo of items strewn through its aisles after the quake.

‘Well that was epic wasn’t it?!’ it captioned the photo.
