Tens of thousands of commuters are facing travel chaos throughout the day after a train derailed outside one of the capital’s busiest rail stations.

National Rail is warning passengers to completely avoid using London Victoria station after a engineering train came off the tracks.

The disruption has caused major delays and cancellations to all services in and out of the station, which is used by about 230,000 commuters every day.

Network Rail said engineers were working hard to clear the obstruction, which is currently blocking platforms 9 to 13.

However it warned that disruption is expected to continue for the rest of the day and into the evening rush hour due to the complexity of removing the stricken train.

Among the worst hit services is the Brighton line and all Southern Railway trains, while the Gatwick Express has also been affected by widespread suspensions.

The incident occurred at 3am this morning at one of the busiest junctions outside London Victoria.

Network Rail tweeted: ‘We would like to apologise to passengers affected by disruption on Southern trains into London Victoria this morning due to a derailed engineering train.

‘We are working to remove the derailed vehicle as quickly as possible.

‘Passengers are advised to travel later in the day if possible and avoid London Victoria by seeking alternative routes via London Bridge or Blackfriars as trains will be delayed, diverted or cancelled.’
