Most women dream of a fairytale proposal complete with the perfect diamond ring.

From skywriting, flash mobs to candle lit dinners and romantic walks along the beach, nearly everyone has a cliche story to tell.

But sometimes engagements don’t always go as planned.

Here, unlucky women from around the world reveal their hilarious or downright disastrous proposal stories – and how their partner popping the question was far from the fairytale they were expecting.

‘I had already broken things off and he calls me out of the blue like a month later and goes: “You should marry me, just quit school. You can stay home and I will pay for everything, even a boob job. It’s the only thing missing to make you a trophy wife”,’ one woman recalled.

‘Yeah I hung up and blocked him.’

Another woman said: ‘He put the ring in a bag of weed and told me to pack a bowl….I stupidly said “yes”. We broke up maybe a year later thank god.’

One shocked woman shared a story about her friend whose boyfriend proposed to her by paying for her breast implant surgery instead of getting a ring.

‘Her boyfriend who was paying for her new boobs comes over and says he will be in recovery room with her when she gets out so I don’t need to go with her,’ she said.

‘Next day my friend gets her surgery and is in the recovery room and she texts me later that night saying that her boyfriend used her new boobs as an engagement ring since he bought them and they cost about the same as an engagement ring.

‘So I was like…congrats on your engagement boobs!! They got married then had a baby then got divorced like four years later and she took her boobs out and sent them back to him. Oh and his new wife also received engagement boobs.’

An underwhelmed woman said her mother found a marriage proposal on her answering machine on April 1.

‘My mom’s ex-husband asked her on their answering machine…. On April 1st. She wasn’t sure if it was a joke or not. And it wasn’t because it was an inside joke or something, he just either didn’t think it through or thought it’d be funny,’ she said.

Another woman said her cousin thought it would be a good joke to break up with his wife before popping the question.

‘My cousin proposed to his wife by taking her on a hike, breaking up with her halfway through, then being like ‘PSYCH! Wanna marry me?’ …I don’t know why she said yes.’

One woman said she thought it was bizarre when her now-husband repeatedly asked her to move their pet cat’s recliner into another room.

‘My husband hid the ring under the cat’s recliner (yes our cat has a mini recliner. We had moved into our house a couple months prior and were still kind of moving stuff around. He asked me to grab the cat recliner and move it into the spare bedroom.

‘But I didn’t want the chair in the bedroom so I said no. He asked again, I said no. He insisted and I got super annoyed because it made way more sense to have the damn chair where it was. Finally he was like, “can you just pick up the chair please?” And I angrily gave in and found the ring.’

Another woman shared a story about how her parents got engaged.

‘When I asked my parents, who just celebrated 40 years of marriage, how they got engaged my dad said ‘your mother walked into my dorm room and I said: your t**s look huge are you pregnant?’ Well she was. She had no clue until he mentioned it. And that’s how they wound up engaged.’

Despite proposals going wrong, many said their stories had happy endings.

‘I was getting out of the shower and my now husband of 11 years told me to sit down on the toilet. I was dripping wet and he proposed. He’s an amazing man just sucked at the proposal,’ one said.

Another woman said her now-husband proposed to her twice – both times naked because he thought it would be a funny story to tell in the future.

‘First time my-now husband proposed he was naked. I said yes. We split up but got back together he proposed again and he was naked again,’ she said.

‘I asked mine why, he insisted on being naked he was like it will be a good story for when we are old.’

Another woman said she was proposed to at Walmart.

‘I just found out I was pregnant. We were at Walmart he goes and gets one of those plastic rings out of those machines and he asked me! Married 15 years now,’ she said.

One couple had a romantic start until the proposal took place in a car park.

‘My fiance took me to the city got a fancy hotel room, had couples massage, took me out for dinner and after dinner standing in the parking lot he proposed,’ she said.

‘He’s very shy and didn’t want people in the restaurant to watch us. Five years later still together.’

Others revealed their partners popped the question during mid-arguments.

‘Mid argument, a ring box thrown at me and a “I was gonna ask later..but will you f***ing marry me?”… Needless to say 13 years on and I’m happily engaged to my partner of 10 years,’ one woman said.

Another added: ‘My now-husband proposed to me while we’re having a fight. Hormones raging and I was so ready to up and leave. Then he kneeled and said he wants to marry me while my face is a mess because I was crying and in the middle of me raging…

‘I forgot what we were fighting about and just stopped crying and I was like what the hell and then got confused and eventually end up saying “yes”… and here we are married for seven years.’
