Dream job alert! Disney to set up a movie special effects headquarters in Australia – and there will be more than 500 roles up for grabs

  • Industrial Light and Magic will set up a new office in Sydney’s Moore Park
  • The visual effects company was founded by Star Wars filmmaker George Lucas
  • More than 500 jobs will be on offer, after the NSW Government approved plans

The Disney-owned visual effects company Industrial Light and Magic will establish a headquarters in Australia, creating 500 new jobs.

The company, founded by Star Wars filmmaker George Lucas, will set up a branch at the Entertainment Quarter in Moore Park in the city’s east.

Disney was enticed to set up in Australia after the New South Wales government offered a 10 per cent tax subsidy for the post-production, digital and visual effects sector.

ILM has created effects for major films such as Pirates of The Caribbean and The Avengers.

The tax break can be accessed by filmmakers who will spend more than $500,000 on the sector in NSW – matching incentives offered in South Australia and Queensland.

The global visual company, founded in 1975, will begin hiring staff to work on effects for the next Star Wars film, The Rise Of Skywalker.

ILM is expected to deliver $333million in post-production business in the first five years and $100million a year after.

The global production company will provide a digital effects learning program, with the state government investing $6million in skills training.

ILM will start the post-production project next month and will use Fox Studios as a temporary working space.

Minister for Jobs and Investment Stuart Ayres said he looks ‘forward to seeing more jobs, investment and projects being located in NSW’.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian said establishing a leading visual effects company will teach ‘invaluable skills to hundreds of people in NSW’.

‘The digital skills taught by the best in the world will also benefit many other industries in NSW including software development, robots, engineering and defence.’

The Premier, ILM creative director Rob Bredow and executive Luke Hetherington  announced the deal on Monday.

Sydney’s ILM office will be the fifth in the world, among those established in San Francisco, Vancouver, London and Singapore.
