Downing Street experienced a new political reshuffle today as a removal van arrived to move ex-chancellor Sajid Javid out to make way for successor Rishi Sunak.

The hefty lorry parked up outside Number 11 Downing Street this morning to help the former finance chief move his family effects out of the grace-and-favour pad.

The vehicle was from Bishop’s Move, the same firm that moved Mr Javid in when he was appointed last July.

He moved his family into the two-bedroom apartment above No 10 after Mr Johnson chose to move into the larger, four-bedroom flat about No 11 with girlfriend Carrie Symonds.

A source close to the ex-chancellor confirmed that the lorry was moving his effects out to make way for Mr Sunak and his family.

Earlier this week he declared the Budget will go ahead on March 11 as scheduled despite the abrupt departure of Mr Javid last week.

He killed off rumours of a delay saying he was ‘cracking on’ with preparations for the crucial financial package.

Downing Street had previously signalled that the Budget could be pushed back after the dramatic resignation of Mr Javid during the reshuffle last week.

The apartment above the finance minister’s office in No 11 has been home to PMs and their families since 1997, when Tony and Cherie Blair, who had a young family,  chose it over the two-bedroom flat above the more famous black door.

The tradition was upheld by subsequent Prime Ministers, with Gordon Brown and his wife Sarah, and David and Samantha Cameron and their children enjoying the more spacious home above Number 11.

But Mr Johnson, whose children are grown up, shares the spacious living quarters with only Ms Symonds, 31.

Mr Javid by contrast has a wife and small children, but he is thought to have spent more time at the large family home in Fulham which features added security since he was made home secretary last year.
