A driver has managed to lose all 12 points on his licence after being caught speeding over the Easter weekend.

The Western Australian driver was spotted by Meekatharra police travelling at 143km/h in a 110km/h zone on Friday – costing him his license and a $800 fine.

Ordinarily, if you are caught speeding 33km/h over the limit in Western Australia the offence will cost you six demerit points with the same monetary fine.

The driver of the Toyota Corolla was caught doing 143km/h along the Great Northern Highway towards Perth

The offending driver said ‘I’m driving to Perth, I don’t know how fast I was going’ when the officer asked them for an explanation for the excessive speeding.

Police radar caught the driver doing 143 km/h on the Great Northern Highway.

He will be prosecuted for doing 141 km/h because two kilometres are removed as a margin of error for radar scaling.

The double demerit policy that has been rolled out across the Easter and Anzac period from the 18th-22nd of and the 24th-28th of April.

Not all states and territories in Australia use double demerit policies but NSW, Western Australia and ACT will all have it in effect.
