Drug smuggler drowns while trying to bring 60 kgs of cocaine to shore at the Port of Newcastle

Drug cartel diver dies attempting to recover nearly 60 KILOGRAMS of cocaine from a river – before his body is found floating beside the enormous haul worth $20million

A diver has died after being found washed up with 50kg of cocaine on the shore at Newcastle.

Detectives are investigating after the diver was found unconscious on the shore at Heron road, alongside the Port of Newcastle, on Monday morning.

Members of the public and paramedics tried to revive the man but he died at the scene.

NSW Police say numerous packages containing more than 50kg of white powder – believed to be cocaine worth $20 million – were recovered nearby.

The diver is yet to be formally identified.

Police divers will continue searching surrounding waters on Tuesday with help from Australian Border Force officers.

NSW Organised Crime Squad detectives are being helped by Australian Federal Police officers.
