UChicago pro-Palestine protestors rattle off a list of demands

Student protestors at the University of Chicago have posted a list of supplies they need to continue their pro-Palestine encampments. The list of supplies, ranging from first aid supplies to HIV tests and Plan B, were posted to an Instagram story by the organizers of the University of Chicago pro-Palestine movements on Thursday.

The supplies marked as ‘needed most’ included a table, heated gloves, wound-packing gauze, portable chargers, gauze, CAT tourniquets, ACE bandages, ABD pads for wounds, goggles, emergency bandages and trauma sheers. Other supplies requested include toiletries like Vaseline, tweezers, Chapstick, contact solutions and cases,and menstrual products.

While most of the college protests in the Chicago area have remained relatively peaceful, student protestors have also requested more protection-oriented equipment, such as buckets with lids, helmets, butterfly suture closures, and IFAK pouches. The list of items prompted speculation and taunting from X users, who view the requested items as unnecessary and divergent from the intentions of the protest to the point where it’s almost comical.

‘I survived the UChicago Palestine protest and all I got was this lousy HIV diagnosis,’ one user wrote. ‘I am honestly surprised they didn’t request juice boxes, snacks and trophies,’ wrote another. Aside from actual camping gear, student protestors asked for COVID tests, buffers for behind the ear masks, and utensils and bowls for food.

University of Chicago students are not the only ones asking for supplies for their encampments. At UCLA, student protestors published their own list of items needed to continue their encampment, with dietary restrictions in mind, per Fox News . The list of items included vegan and gluten-free food , a hallmark of Gen-Z wokeness often ridiculed by older generations. Other items marked as ‘urgent’ included ‘wood for barrier’, ‘knee and elbow pads’ and ‘gas masks.’

The students also made it a point to make a list of items they don’t want, which includes anything packaged, coffee, bagels, bananas and nuts. In fact, a Columbia student stated that the universities have an ‘obligation’ to feed non-student protestors occupying Hamilton Hall . ‘Do you want students to die of dehydration? This is basic humanitarian aid we’re asking for. Like, could people please have a glass of water?’ protest organizer Johannah King-Slutzky told reporters Tuesday.

But the student crumbled when reporters pointed out the irony of demanding supplies from an institution whose rules she and fellow protestors were actively breaking. ‘Nobody is asking them to bring anything, we’re asking them to not violently stop us from bringing in basic humanitarian aid. We are looking for a commitment from them that they will not,’ she said.

As pro-Palestine protests at college campuses calling for a cease fire in Gaza have swept the nation, the death toll continues to rise as the seventh-month war continues without any signs of letting up.

Some demonstrations have devolved into violence, notably Columbia University and NYU where NYPD officers in riot gear had to forcefully remove protestors from campus buildings and the encampment on the quad in an insurrection-like fashion. According to AP News, approximately 2,100 students have been arrested in connection with the protests.
