Millie was taken last month when Mr Schmutter ducked into the shops to buy the paper, when his car – with Millie inside – was stolen in Blind Bight in Victoria.

The car was eventually found on Monday and the woman who allegedly took off with it was arrested.

But Mr Schmutter was determined to find his beloved Millie.

A day after the car was recovered, council rangers found Millie wandering a street in Montrose – more than 60 kilometres from where she was inadvertently stolen.

The nine-year-old beagle was found on a street in Montrose, more than 60km from where she was taken, by council rangers on Tuesday.

The council rangers took her to a local pet shelter and was instantly recognised by staff who had seen posts to find her on social media.
