England suffered the dubious distinction of equalling an unwanted 70-year record when they faced Iceland at Wembley.

In the opening stages of Friday’s friendly Gareth Southgate’s side promptly found themselves a goal down courtesy of an early strike from Jon Thorsteinsson.

The former Fulham youngster found himself in space after just 12 minutes, and promptly fired his shot beyond Aaron Ramsdale at the goalkeeper’s near post to give the visitors the lead.

Having once again conceded the opening goal at their home stadium England repeated an unwanted feat stretching back to Walter Winterbottom’s time in charge of the Three Lions.

In their last three games at the national stadium England have conceded first.

Against Brazil in March youngster Endrick became the youngest international goalscorer in the stadium’s history as the Selecao ran out 1-0 winners in a friendly.

Then Youri Tielemans struck first as Belgium gained an early lead in a 2-2 draw later that month before Thorsteinsson’s opener on Friday made it three consecutive games at Wembley.

The last time England conceded first in three successive games at Wembley was  between 1953 and 1954 during a spell where they drew with a FIFA representative side, suffered an infamous defeat by Hungary and beat Wales 3-2.
