A father has built his own secret ‘man cave’ behind a bookshelf under the stairs after his little child learnt how to turn doorknobs.

In the clip, the sound of his family becomes muffled as he wanders towards the wooden shelf in his St. Louis home, Missouri, to fulfill a fantasy seen in films.

He pulls a hard-back book, allowing the shelf to swing open like a door unveiling the unsuspecting cubby hole.

Upon entering the Harry Potter-style hideaway, a nifty wooden shelf lines the small wall space.

It is fitted with DIY gadgets including a silicone mask for sanding, a pipe-like shape and a tool-box, in the clip from January 18.

Perhaps he seeks to get some home improvements done within the privacy of the secret room.

His range of wallets and glasses cases are neatly lined up across an adjacent work surface, while a wooden chair offers him a spot to find peace and quiet.

Unlike some man caves, this one does not include any equipment for working out.

The father explained online that he built the secret compartment because of his child recently learning how to use doorknobs.

A man cave gives men the space to process their stress, according to The Good Men Project.

It allows them to ‘regulate their emotions’ and explore who they are without the rules of being around others, according to the website.

They might be better able to tend to the needs of other people in their life, said Man Cave Know How.

Dr. Terri Orbuch, who is known as the Love Doctor, found that 29 per cent of spouses said they didn’t have enough space in her 25 years of research.
