Female tombstoner, 29, breaks both her legs as she misjudges her 10ft cliff leap and lands on her knees on submerged rocks

  • She was airlifted to hospital from Winspit near Swanage, Dorset, yesterday
  • A bystander had to run a mile to find phone signal in the remote coastal area
  • The coastguard said she was lucky not to have suffered spinal and neck injuries

A female tombstoner has broken both her legs and suffered nasty flesh lacerations after misjudging a clifftop jump on to submerged rocks.

The 29-year-old was airlifted to hospital after plunging 10ft down the rock face at Winspit near Swanage, Dorset, yesterday afternoon.

After landing awkwardly on her knees, she was hauled out of the water by friends before a member of the public ran for over a mile to get phone signal.

A coastguard helicopter was scrambled to the remote location to winch her from the cliffs and fly her to Poole Hospital.

The Swanage lifeboat also attended and gave the woman gas and air pain relief while the helicopter was en route.

Ian Brown, of the Swanage coastguard, said: ‘She was tombstoning and totally misjudged where she was going to land.

‘She landed on her knees on rocks. She as very lucky not to have suffered spinal or neck injuries.

‘The location was in the middle of nowhere. A member of the public had to run about a mile away to get a mobile phone signal.

‘It would have been very difficult to get an ambulance there so the decision was made to winch her off the rocks via a helicopter.’

Tombstoning has grabbed headlines in recent years for after several thrill-seekers have died or been seriously injured while partaking in the risky activity.

It is believed that two men who were pulled from the waters off Torquay last week were tombstoning.
