Former foreign minister steals the show in a blue sequin dress as the government delivers its budget

Julie Bishop had all eyes on her as her party delivered its long-anticipated Budget on Tuesday night.

Donning a dazzling blue sequin midi dress, the former foreign minister appeared visibly enthusiastic ahead of her colleague Josh Frydenberg’s first Budget delivery in Canberra.

Ms Bishop was photographed jumping with her hands in the air, flaunting her svelte frame in the mermaid-like Rachel Gilbert gown as Mr Frydenberg prepared for his biggest speech to date as Treasurer.

The ‘Orla Dress’, designed by the famed Australian designer, retails at $1,299.00 and can be purchased from a number of retailers, including David Jones and The Iconic.

Ms Bishop is often commended for her wardrobe choices, earning herself the title of ‘Minister of Fashion’ alongside her former titles of Deputy leader of the Liberal party and Foreign Affairs Minister.

Ms Bishop now joins the likes of Nicole Kidman, Kim Kardashian, Taylor Swift, Olivia Palermo, Karlie Kloss, Heidi Klum and Princess Beatrice, who have donned Ms Gilbert’s dresses in the past.

Ms Bishop’s sparkly showing during the Budget announcement drew attention away from Mr Frydenberg, who announced a Budget surplus for the first time in 12 years.

Low and middle-income earners are set to receive more than $1,000 a year in tax cuts, or $21 a week, on top of the $500 in tax relief they received last year.

Ministers are tonight celebrating the country being ‘back in black’ with the first Budget surplus since John Howard’s long-serving treasurer Peter Costello delivered his last Budget 12 years ago – before the global financial crisis hit.

Mr Frydenberg, 47, says his first Budget, with a $7.1 billion surplus for 2019-20, was the result of ‘responsible decisions – difficult but necessary decisions.’

The Treasurer hailed his financial plan as one designed to make life easier for ‘average families’ on a median household income of $74,800 a year.

‘Their cost of living pressures will be eased… there will be more money in their pocket,’ said Mr Frydenberg.

The 62-year-old famously announced her retirement from politics earlier this year, after a humiliating defeat in her run for the top job.

‘I will not recontest the seat of Curtin at the next election,’ the former Liberal deputy leader and foreign minister told Parliament in late February.

In a short House of Representatives speech, the former corporate lawyer said she was proud to have served ‘my beloved Liberal Party, my state of Western Australia, and my country.’

She is retiring from her ultra-safe Perth electorate of Curtin, months after receiving just 11 votes in the Liberal Party leadership ballot to succeed Malcolm Turnbull as Prime Minister.
